These jewels are designed to bring protection to the wearer. Eye-shaped talismans, known as evil eyes, have existed at least as far back as BC Greece, believed to ward off curses set upon people through malevolent glares. Iconography of patron saints, believed to offer strength and protection to travellers, feature on Etruscan-inspired coin pendants.
